چکیده

Abstract. With the continuous development of China ocean dynamic environment satellite series (Haiyang-2, HY-2), it is urgent to explore potential application HY-2B in Arctic sea ice thickness retrievals. In this study, we first derive radar freeboard and during two cycles (from October 2019 April 2020 from 2021) using altimeter compare results with Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) CryoSat-2 (CS-2) products. We evaluate our products Operation IceBridge (OIB) airborne data Ice, Cloud, land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) Finally, estimate uncertainties thickness. Here, by calculating difference between relative elevation floe obtained subtracting mean surface (MSS) height anomaly (SSHA) determined an average 15 lowest points method. The deviation CS-2 within 0.02 m, whereas 0.2 m. freeboards are generally thicker than AWI CS-2, except spring (March April). A segment likely has more early winter segment. also find that deviations over multiyear (MYI) larger those first-year (FYI). correlation retrievals OIB values 0.77 (0.84), a root square error (RMSE) 0.13 (0.10) m absolute (MAE) 0.12 (0.081) 0.65 (0.80), RMSE 1.86 (1.00) MAE 1.72 (0.75) uncertainty range 0.021 0.027 while 0.61 0.74 future work will include reprocessing L1 dedicated retracker, waveforms directly identify leads release reasonable suitable for polar retrieval.

Ku-band radar penetration into snow cover on Arctic sea ice using airborne data

Satellite radar altimetry provides data to monitor winter Arctic sea-ice thickness variability on interannual, basin-wide scales. When using this technique an assumption is made that the peak of the radar return originates from the snow/ice interface. This has been shown to be true in the laboratory for cold, dry snow as is the case on Arctic sea ice during winter. However, this assumption has ...

Ku-band Radar Altimeter Surface Wind Speed Algorithm

An algorithm for the retrieval of surface wind speed from Ku-band altimeter backscatter coefficient is proposed. The algorithm was derived using two-month worth of ENVISAT altimeter backscatter data collocated with ECMWF model and buoy wind speeds. The algorithm was extensively verified for ENVISAT, ERS2 and Jason-1 altimeters. The algorithm performance is better than the “modified Chelton-Went...

Analysis of CryoSat’s radar altimeter waveforms over different Arctic sea ice regimes

Satellite altimetry has been used to derive information about sea ice thickness in the Arctic already for several decades. As part of the algorithms applied the shape of the radar signal is used to identify leads, the open water between ice floes. Analysis of airborne altimeter data reveals that the waveform shape can additionally be used to identify different sea ice types. In this study we an...

Sea ice thickness and recent Arctic warming

The climatic impact of increased Arctic sea ice loss has received growing attention in the last years. However, little focus has been set on the role of sea ice thickness, although it strongly determines surface heat fluxes. Here ensembles of simulations using the EC-Earth atmospheric model (Integrated Forecast System) are performed and analyzed to quantify the atmospheric impacts of Arctic sea...
